THISBE: CATARINA (asleep).

THISBE.

(Turning toward the bed.) Rather than live unloved, thou wouldst have met death joyfully, wouldst thou not? If thou hadst felt that thy life had no roots in any other heart, what wouldst thou then have done? Oh! thou wouldst not have had the coinage to finish out thy day; thou wouldst have owned thyself wearied by the anticipation of so long a journey to be traveled all alone, and thou wouldst have said unto the tomb: “I long to sleep!” (She opens a small casket which stands upon the table.) Yes, of the two decoctions that were in this casket, a powerful narcotic and a deadly poison, but one remains.

To-morrow, neither will remain.
